English, Dronacharya Government College, Gurugram, India
Abstract
The redefinition of women’s roles and identities in literature has been a central theme of feminist criticism, reflecting the broader struggle for gender equality and recognition. Shobha De, a prominent Indian English writer, has emerged as a powerful voice in this literary tradition, bringing to light the struggles, aspirations, and triumphs of women in modern Indian society. Her works, characterized by their unapologetic exploration of gender dynamics, delve deeply into the complexities of female identity, particularly in urban settings. Through her bold and candid portrayal of women navigating societal expectations and personal desires, De challenges entrenched patriarchal norms and celebrates the assertion of female agency. This paper examines De's contributions to Indian feminist literature by analyzing her key novels, including Socialite Evenings, Starry Nights, and Second Thoughts. These narratives serve as a critique of societal conventions, highlighting themes such as autonomy, sexuality, marital discord, and professional aspirations. De's characters often embody resistance and empowerment, representing a shift in how women are portrayed in Indian English literature. By situating her work within the framework of feminist criticism, the study explores how De redefines the identity of women in a rapidly modernizing and urbanizing India.Furthermore, the paper addresses the contradictions and limitations of De’s feminist approach. While her narratives empower urban, elite women, they often overlook the experiences of women from marginalized communities. This selective representation raises questions about the inclusivity of her feminist critique. Additionally, the paper examines the socio-cultural context of De’s work, situating it within the larger discourse of Indian feminism, which grapples with the interplay of tradition and modernity.Through a detailed analysis of De's thematic focus and literary style, this study highlights her contribution to contemporary feminist discourse in India. By redefining female identities and questioning societal norms, De’s works not only reflect the evolving roles of women in Indian society but also provoke critical discussions about the future of feminist literature. This paper offers a comprehensive understanding of Shobha De’s literary significance, emphasizing her role in shaping the narrative of modern Indian women and contributing to the global feminist literary movement.
