Applied Psychology, uniersity of delhi, India
Abstract
The pervasive influence of media on human psychology has become a critical subject of study in the modern era, characterized by an ever-expanding digital landscape. Media, encompassing traditional formats such as television and print as well as digital platforms like social media, profoundly impacts psychological well-being, cognitive processes, and social behaviors. This study investigates the multifaceted psychological effects of media consumption, with a particular focus on its role in shaping perceptions, altering emotional states, and influencing decision-making patterns. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study combines quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to explore these phenomena across diverse demographics.Key findings highlight the dual-edged nature of media influence: while it facilitates information dissemination, awareness campaigns, and global connectivity, it also contributes to stress, anxiety, and cognitive overload. The study identifies significant correlations between excessive media usage and psychological challenges such as diminished self-esteem, heightened stress levels, and disrupted attention spans. Additionally, demographic variables, including age, gender, and socioeconomic status, mediate these effects, emphasizing the need for tailored interventions. The paper underscores the importance of fostering media literacy, advocating for responsible media production, and promoting mindful consumption practices. By addressing the adverse effects while amplifying the benefits, stakeholders can create a healthier media ecosystem. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on media psychology and offers actionable insights for policymakers, educators, and mental health professionals.
