Abstract

The widespread use of social media platforms has significantly transformed the way individuals perceive and construct their identities in the digital age. Social media enables users to create curated digital personas that often differ from their real-world selves, influencing self-perception, cultural identity, and social interactions. This study explores the multifaceted role of social media in shaping modern identity by analyzing its impact on self-concept, cultural alignment, and psychological well-being.Using a mixed-method approach, the research integrates quantitative data collected from 400 respondents across various demographics with qualitative insights from in-depth interviews. The findings reveal a strong correlation between social media usage and self-perception, where frequent engagement leads to both enhanced self-awareness and increased pressure to conform to idealized standards. Cultural identity is also significantly influenced, with social media serving as a platform for both cultural convergence and divergence. On one hand, it fosters global cultural exchange and awareness; on the other, it amplifies the challenges of cultural homogenization and ethnocentrism.Additionally, the study highlights the psychological implications of social media, such as heightened anxiety and depression due to constant comparisons and the need for validation through likes and comments. Social interactions have also undergone a paradigm shift, becoming more instantaneous and global but often lacking depth and authenticity. The research underscores the dual-edged nature of social media as a tool for self-expression and cultural connection while cautioning against its potential negative effects. By shedding light on these dynamics, this study provides actionable recommendations for policymakers, educators, and individuals to promote healthier social media usage and identity construction practices. The findings contribute to the growing body of literature on digital identity and offer a foundation for future research into the evolving relationship between social media and identity in the digital age.
